Built a RAG system for email search — the goal was answering questions like 'what happened with Amazon' in plain language instead of scrolling through the inbox, using Llama 3 running locally through Ollama so nothing left the machine. Combined keyword matching with semantic vector search (ChromaDB) for retrieval; ended up hand-writing a merge sort for the date-ordering step instead of relying on a library sort, mainly to keep the retrieval logic transparent and easy to debug. Pulled real emails through Gmail’s OAuth2 flow and had to deal with the actual mess of MIME parsing — base64 payloads, stripping HTML, malformed headers. Later added a voice mode with Whisper for input and pyttsx3 for the replies; kept the retrieval pipeline separate from the interface so switching between sample data and live Gmail didn’t touch the core logic.
